August 2009 saw the launch of our teenage forum, brighthearts.brighthearts_Logo_combined

Before we started planning the forum, we wanted to speak to our young people to find out what support or information was needed. We wanted to hold workshops and have one to one conversations that might not take place with parents. With the support of the CHF staff and trustees we began thinking up exciting and different events that would give teenagers independence, fun and an opportunity to speak openly.

Our first adventure was a trip for ten lucky teenagers, staff, and volunteers to Portugal. We took part in lots of sport and fun activities, that, as a group we just couldnt have done in the UK.

The Climate helped, the activity centre helped but the team spirit and support within our group made it possible for everyone to push themselves and try new things.

As well as playing hard, we worked hard too…discussing lots of issues to do with growing up with a heart condition, and how the Childrens Heart Federation can develop brighthearts into an accessible and useful forum for teenagers aged 13-17.

For some of the group it was the first time they had been out of the UK, for others it was the first time they had tried some water sports, for all of us it was a life changing experience.
