In the current climate of uncertainty around Brexit and the possibility of a no-deal exit, patients and their parents/ carers need to be aware of the following:

• Arrangements for reciprocal healthcare. People with hard to insure or potentially uninsurable health conditions may face challenges moving around the EU in the event of a no deal situation, because reciprocal healthcare arrangements  (the E111 scheme) will lapse unless new bilateral arrangements are put in place. Therefore it is essential that you seek specialist insurance advice before finalising travel arrangements.

• Medicines ‘serious shortage protocols (SSPs)’. Under secondary legislation now before Parliament, the Government will be able to issue SSPs allowing pharmacists to substitute medicines in short supply for alternatives. This may impact on those patients for whom equivalent alternatives are unavailable. If this affects you or your child please seek advice from your prescribing clinician.
